CBCT In Orthodontics

The imaging technology used in orthodontics has certainly come a long way since the early days of the profession, but recent years have seen it truly progress by leaps and bounds. The latest and greatest of modern innovation is CBCT, and it’s improving diagnosis and helping orthodontists create better, more effective treatment plans.

What Is CBCT?

CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. Using a highly detailed yet user-friendly computer software, this imaging technique yields full 3D displays of the mouth and teeth, allowing those in orthodontics and related dental arenas to get a much more accurate view of their patients.

Though the technology has been in development for quite some time, it has only been introduced to the dental field and adapted for orthodontic practices in more recent years.

What Makes CBCT So Different?

What many people do not know is that previous imaging techniques were/are highly limited in comparison to CBCT. In fact, before CBCT only 2D images could be produced (those that appeared to be in 3D were an illusion, being actually separate 2D images put together).

This new form of imaging also makes it easier to view soft tissues, bones and other surrounding features, which is even more important for orthodontics.

How CBCT Imaging Can Help You

Using this new form of imaging, orthodontists can better diagnose and correct issues with your teeth and craniofacial tissues.

If you have any impacted teeth, for example, your orthodontist can get a more accurate look at the position of the tooth and figure out the best angle to address the problem.

If you are getting braces or similar corrective treatment, CBCT imaging can show more clearly your progress and give both you and your orthodontist a better idea of what your future smile will look like. Basically, this technology helps to take the guesswork out of dentistry and orthodontics.

What Next?

Many predict that this new technology is indeed the way of the future and will be seen more and more in coming years. But for now, the orthodontists using it are ahead of the game, and the patients being treated by them are getting the best of the best.
